Day 317 Color Everywhere

Monday, November 14 – Everywhere I looked in Zion there were these beautiful fall colors surrounded by gorgeous rock formations. There were certainly lots of other people that knew this is where you find fall colors, as the park was plenty busy all week. None of the traditional shots though for this workshop, as our instructors took us to their favorites, that were not quite as busy.

Day 316 A Slot Canyon

Sunday, November 13 – Kimmie and I decided to venture down to this slot canyon at one of the stops the group made.  We could shoot anywhere in the area and decided that the foliage would still be there for us when we came back out, so off we went. Not an easy trek for me, but I made it even after sliding down the rocks on my rear to get in the canyon. Getting out was another story. But, just like Antelope, it was well worth the effort. There are more golds and browns in this one than at Page.

Day 315 Solitude

Saturday, November 12 – A scene we saw often in Zion. It is sure obvious, as you get to the higher terrain, that this is a high desert area and no a whole lot grows. This was shot up above the tunnel area right before the checkerboard Mesa.

Day 314 Water

Friday, November 11 – Couldn’t pass up doing a little smooth water shooting too. My knee was giving me fits at ths spot, so I opted to not hike very far and just enjoy the closer beauty. By the end of the week, my knee knew what hiking was and settled into it pretty well. Maybe I just got a whole lot smarter of where to walk and where not to.

Day 313 Light and Dark

Thursday, Novemb 10 – Shot this one just before sunset right after going through the tunnel to the east side of the park. Not a drive I like due to the height, but after so many trips through there, I am getting better. I love the contrast of the illumination that still remains from Mr. Sun on that back ridge and yet the foreground ridge is in shade already.

Day 312 Not A Meteor Shower

Wednesday, November 9- No this is not a meteor shower! This is a 3 minute exposure of the stars. I included some of the beautiful rocks  on the horizon. Surprising how well they light up on a dark night with a long exposure. We had to do these before the moon came up and gave us too much light. Make sure to click on the image to see the streaks and do that for the north star one from yesterday too.

Day 311 Star Trails

Tuesday, November 8 – We even got to go out one night and shoot star trails; something I have never done. It was really not hard at all once I found the North Star. Not many of the students accomplished that which gives the circular pattern. Very fun and something I will definately do here in the future. This was a 30 minute exposure and the noise reduction was set.

Day 310 A Few Left To Change

Monday, November 7 -  There were still a few leaves left to change, but by the time we left, most were past their prime and on the ground. Glad we went when we did. Kimmie and I spent a couple days before the workshop began shooting in the St. George area; Snow Canyon and a ghost town. I need to go through those pictures yet and will share them when I do.

Day 309 Why Photogs Come To Zion

Sunday, November 6 – Here is one of the examples of what draws photographers to Zion in the fall. What gorgeous colors here and the perfect time of year to sho0t them. After that first day of rain and cold, we had some gorgeous days with no wind.

Day 308 A Brief Break

Saturday, November 5 – We had a brief break in the showers so I decided to get a landscape. This workshop was the best I have ever been too. Lots of classroom lecture and then they turned us loose to shoot. It was up to us to use what we had learned and apply. No hints of what lens to use, but they were always handy to give some advice. Each night we were up until the wee hours putting together our 4 images for critiquing in the morning. I learned so much!! Can not wait for the next one which is in Arches/Canyonlands. I found out that the Canon 5DM2 has focusing issues and has to be adjusted for each lens. Not sure I would have purchased it if I had known that.
