Day 158 Time To Eat

Tuesday, June 7 – Here was the last meal that I had in Rome at a little high end restaurant in my hotel. Funny thing about Italy; the fancy restaurants don’t open until 7 and most people come between 8 and 9 pm. You have a antipasta first, which is an appetizer, then a first course of pasta and then a 2nd and then the main dish and then dessert. And of course then there is Italian bread which has no salt and you don’t put butter on it, but dip in olive oil instead.  I didn’t follow order exactly and began with a pasta and then had another for my main dish. I also had a fruit salad for dessert and just had to have french fries. They have the most amazing fries in Italy. Someone told me that they fry them in olive oil individually. I don’t know what the secret is, but they are very good. Here is my last Italiano meal. It was plated so beautifully; as son, Nick, says, presentation is very important and it sure was here.

I agree Italian french fries are AWESOME! Even the ones at McDonalds taste better! I miss the Italian bread. It is very different by region though, harder in Florence and Southern Italy. In Northern Italy the bread was served with olive oil and grated Parmesan to sprinkle on it. 🙂 Yum!

Walter just asked me what those triangle things were with the chunks of something in sauce. They are puff pastry with mushrooms in a cream sauce on top. The 2 sticks were spaghetti that had been toasted. The difference in color was in how well done that pastry was; nice contrast, I think and very clever. The pasta dish was a beef sauce. Certainly nothing like we have here.

YUM! I love the story you told with these photos. Makes me really see what eating a meal at a high end Italian restaraunt would be like. A person definitely eats with their eyes before anything else so presentation is very important.
