Day 316 Coming In For A Landing

Here are a pair of Black-Headed Herons enjoying a day by the water. One decided it was time to take a peek at the area from the top of the nearest Acacia tree. Blizzard warnings now out for central Montana. I cleaned the chicken house today and put their water heaters out, so the hens are all ready.

Day 315 Zebra’s Stripes Are Not All The Same

Did you know that every zebra has it’s own unique stripe pattern? The babies and mothers recognize each other by the stripes. Notice the differences here.

Day 314 Welcome to the World, Baby Josi

The winter storm is heading our way and I am certainly not looking forward to it. I hate cold and snow. I became a Grandma to number 11 yesterday. Welcome to the Mehmke clan, Josephine Louise. I think she looks a whole lot like Marilynn; all 7 lbs 2 ozs and 20 1/2 inches of her.

Day 313 Weird Looking Feathered Friends

These Marabou Storks are mighty weird looking. They have a throat pouch that is very strange. Not all birds had them, so I assume that they can inflate them when they want. My bird book even describes them as an ugly bird. They look like vultures to me. The white bird hanging out with them is a Yellow Billed Stork. Our weather is still forecast to change on Thursday and not for the better. The word blizzard appeared on the online weather I just looked at.

Day 312 Secretary Bird

Here we go with the Secretary Bird, one of my favorites in Tanzania. I finally got all my photos double backed up and started to look through more. I have just at 6000 to go through. Yikes!  Sounds like we are in for a winter storm this Thursday. Makes me wish for the warm temps of Arusha again.

Day 311 African Hare or “Peter Rabbit”

No more exact dates, as I am just following along with Curtis’s numbering. That way we will both finish at the same time on the same number, hopefully. Hope you don’t mind me copying you. I don’t know where I got off in my dates, but I evidentially did. Here is an African Hare which was hiding along the road on our way to the Serengeti. He/she looks pretty much like what we see at home.

Day 310 Camels in Africa?

Tuesday, November 5 – I thought I was seeing things when we came driving up to this group of camels. They were being tended by Masai. Not sure what the story was of where they came from, but it was an obvious roadside tourist attraction. They wanted money for photos taken with the warriors standing with the camels. The fellow here looks like he his contemplating how much to charge. The fellow in the bottom shot was by my window negotiation price which we never did pay. A different take on ears that have had gauges in them. We saw this done by several young men at the Masai wedding we attended. They tuck the stretch earlobe over the ear.

Day 309 Kori Bustard

Monday, November 5 – The Kori Bustard is one of the world’s heaviest flying birds.  We saw them frequently. There are birds that are larger, but none that weigh more that fly. The males weigh around 30#, but have been recorded up to 88#. They have a 9 ft. wingspan and stand 4.9 ft.  tall. Tiff and the boys went home today and I already miss them. It was a fun week with the little cowboys and their mom. We went out to Power this morning to volunteer for Bountiful Baskets. I missed the crew out there while I was gone. It is a great social time, in addition to the workout one gets. The produce this week is outstanding. Got the baskets delivered to my girls and then headed home to try to get motivated to look through more photos.

Day 308 Elephant Love

Sunday, November 4 – I fear that my numbering and days are off. Curtis and I don’t seem to match. Oh, well, when I hit 365, I guess I am done for the year. If we don’t finish at the same time and day, I will just add some photos to make it even. Wish these guys had been out of the shadows, but it is what it is. Notice the termite mound right next to the elephant on the left. They were so much fun watching play fighting.

Day 307 Sunset in Tanzania

Saturday, November 3- Some sunset shots from my trip. Sunsets and sunrises come and go very quickly, unlike what we are used to in Montana.
